15 On Point Kitchen Gifts and Gadgets http://www.juiceitupp.com/15-on-point-kitchen-gifts-and-gadgets/ http://www.juiceitupp.com/15-on-point-kitchen-gifts-and-gadgets/#respond Tue, 15 Nov 2016 20:34:55 +0000 http://www.juiceitupp.com/?p=881 With the holidays right around the corner, you can never stock up on too many great gifts. Here are 25 of our favorite gifts that will liven up any kitchen.

1) Vegetable Spiralizer AKA Zucchini Spaghetti Maker

Can you say gluten-free, nutritious pasta? This gadget will turn any vegetable into pasta, including zucchini, beets, carrots, squash, you name it. This works for people on the Paleo diet, Kosher diet, vegetarian diet, really any diet.

2) Lemon Lime Squeezer AKA Citrus Press

It boggles my mind how many people still hand-squeezer their citrus fruit. Every single person who tries this squeezer is amazed how well it works & they “never go back” to hand squeezing. Use this to make your lemon water in the morning, to make lemonade, or to serve up a Moscow Mule. The color is also a nice vibrant addition to the kitchen.

3) Ice Pop Maker AKA Popsicle Mold

Rather than spend the money on the Ben & Jerry’s (Or let’s be honest here, in ADDITION to the Ben & Jerry’s) you can make your own ice cream with these bomb popsicle molds. You can make a healthy strawberry popsicle or kiwi or simply put some orange juice in it for an orangeade. As adults, we might not find it practical enough to spend any money on ourselves for this, but you know you’d love to get this as a gift. It’s one of the least expensive items on the list, so I recommend just getting one.

4) Kitchen Shears AKA Kitchen Scissors

Cut anything with these heavy-duty scissors. Who doesn’t need a good pair of shears in the kitchen? Cut up your chicken, ribs, or fruit. This nifty tool also works as a can opener and nut-cracker.

5) Cheese Grater AKA Lemon Zester

Ok so almost everyone already has some sort of cheese grater in their cupboard, BUT… how old are they? This one has a great design that makes it extremely easy to use and store.

6) Fish Spatula AKA Pancake Turner

Ok we’ve all had these damn silicone spatulas burn on us. You’ve probably inadvertently eaten some sort of plastic from cheap spatulas. Don’t let that happen to you or your loved ones again. This spatula is top of the line and works very well with any pan, particularly non-stick pans.

7) Portion Control System AKA Tupperware Galore

Eating healthier is something most people want to do. But it’s not always practical to cook each of your meals on the spot. We all got work to do. However, using a portion control system can make your life easier by planning meals ahead of time. If you can skip on the Mickey D’s a few times and use this instead you certainly will be cutting down the calories.

8) Popcorn Popper AKA Instant Movie-style Popcorn Maker

Movie theater quality popcorn sitting on your couch. You can hear and see the popcorn popping without worrying about burning the annoying bag that always gets burnt. I wish I had this thing when I was growing up.

9) Lunchbox AKA Adulting Without Power Rangers

Back in the day, a Power Rangers or Hello Kitty lunchbox showed you were the bomb and probably made you a few friends. However, you probably don’t want to flaunt that at your work today…. Or do you? Well if you want to stay discrete and keep your food hot or cold, get this bad boy.

10) Cone Coffee Filter AKA Coffee Drip Maker

Probably everyone you know makes coffee at home, so help em do it like a pro. With this filter you can make the blackest coffee or a super light coffee. Get back control of your coffee experience.

11) Knife Sharpener AKA The Dullness Nazi

Knives can be like bad relationships. They aren’t fun anymore, or maybe they’re just plain DULL, but somehow you keep them anyway. Instead of ditching your long-love (your knife) you can sharpen it with this Zulay Knife Sharpener. It’s the best relationship counseling you’ll ever find–15 seconds and you’re back to how it was on your first date.

12) Jar Opener AKA Juggernaut Hands

You probably do not want to give this to a man and insult his masculinity. However, for your grandmother, aunt, or as a gag-gift, this is just amazing. Even the worst, hard-to-open jars beg for mercy and open themselves when confronted with this monster of an item. Make Jar Opening Easy Again!

13) Measuring Cups & Spoons AKA Measure Everything

This colorful set of measuring spoons and cups fits in almost any kitchen, bringing a little bit of color to the scene. Well, actually a whole lot of color. While it is probably not intended as a pro-pride statement, you can always give it to a queer friend or somehow who simply loves to smile and loves colors. Let’s fact it, most measuring cups slowly disappear, so help a friend (or yourself) out by getting them a new set.

14) Salt and Pepper Grinder AKA Salt and Pepper Shaker

You can become a hipster instantly with a double-sided salt and pepper grinder. Iodized salt is so passé, get yourself some pink salt and this salt grinder and you’re on your way to good health & showing others you’re not a dinosaur. And if you already own a salt grinder, well, you probably don’t have a 2-in-1.

15) Apple Slicer AKA Apple Terminator

This thing is too cool to not post here. It cuts up your apple into perfect pieces, just like your mom used to do for you. Now that you’re older, your mom might not cut you apples and give them to you on a silver platter, but you can always use some technology to get your the next best thing.

What You Need To Start A Juice Cleanse http://www.juiceitupp.com/what-you-need-to-start-a-juice-cleanse/ http://www.juiceitupp.com/what-you-need-to-start-a-juice-cleanse/#respond Mon, 14 Mar 2016 06:35:38 +0000 http://www.juiceitupp.com/?p=838 Juice-Cleanse-for-Fitness-and-health

Doing a juice cleanse, especially for the first time, takes some commitment. The worse your current dietary habits, the more dedication will be required. You are breaking bad habits and essentially hitting the reset button. But the return on investment – to use business-speak – can be substantial. The saying that you only get out of something what you put into it is apropos. But we’re talking about energy and commitment, not necessarily how much money you spend. Doing a juice cleanse need not be expensive. Here is a summary of what you’ll need:

The Knowledge

Read up on what juicing is, why it is done, and how it is done. Before starting a juice cleanse, you’ll want to go through a pre-cleanse period where you improve or modify your diet. If you are prone to fast food, doughnuts and soda, you’ll want to knock that out before starting a juice cleanse. Switching suddenly could be too much of a shock to the system and you could literally get sick. It’s also common to wean oneself off caffeine and alcohol ahead of time.

The Decision

Don’t neglect the power of your own decisions. A crucial step in doing a juice cleanse is to decide WHY you want to do it and then decide to DO it. Health? Energy? Improve your lifestyle? All of the above? To quote a popular translation of Buddhist text, “We are what we think. All that we are arises with our thoughts. With our thoughts, we make the world.” Decide and make it happen.

The Time

A pre-cleanse period normally lasts 1-7 days, depending on your eating habits. The actual juice cleanse commonly goes for three days. The post-cleanse period, often three days as well, is also vital. The key here is to take one step at a time. No need to shock your system.

Remove Toxins From Your Kitchen

If you have junk food, highly processed and sugary food in your kitchen, more than likely you’ll crave it and want to eat it. Just as important as what you have is what you DON’T have. Enlist the cooperation of your housemates as much as possible and get rid of the deep fat fried, the artificial, the high fructose corn syrup, the sugar-loaded snacks, etc. Even the so-called “natural” is highly suspect. Organic is always a wiser choice.

Water, Lots and Lots of Water

Many juice systems require that you drink eight or more glasses of water per day. Countless people simply do not get enough water. Besides being a great idea overall, hydration is essential in juicing. We recommend bottled or purified water due to chemicals added to much of our tap water these days.

Lemon

It is recommended to add lemon to your water to aid in the detoxification process. You can use a lemon squeezer to make this easier.

A Good Juicer

The type of juicer to choose will depend largely on your budget, what types of fruits and vegetables you’re using, and your personal preference. There is no right or wrong kind. The first thing to know is the different categories of juicer. If cost is not an issue, you may choose to splurge on a Green Star Elite for juicing greens. On a budget? The Breville Compact Juice Extractor might be your best bet. Prices range from under $100 to well over $2,000. Fortunately, we’ve provided detailed guides on which juicer to buy on our website.

Raw Materials

Of course juicing is all about what you’re putting into your body. It is wise to use organic fruits and vegetables, but that will depend on your budget and preference. After you’ve purged your fridge of caustic soda, your freezer of diabolic ice cream, and your pantry of evil Oreos, replenish your cache with REAL food, fruits and vegetables for juicing. Get the munchies? Add some nuts, raw almond butter, seaweed, and healthy items that you can fall back on when the going gets rough. Get some portable containers and put your healthy snacks in them so you don’t go to the dreaded drive-through.

Some good produce to stock are: kale, celery, collard greens, cucumbers, ginger, apples, carrots, cabbage, broccoli, lemons.

Exercise & Rest

Regular exercise and sufficient rest before, during, and after a cleanse is advisable. While mid-cleanse you should keep the exercise light. Your body is transitioning. Exercise and sleep are important in any context.

Pride

Take pride in what you’re doing. Not everyone has the discipline. Once you feel better and possess more physical energy and mental acuity, you may want to make juicing a habit. And it’ll be a good one!

The Real 411 on Juicing – Is it Just a Fad? http://www.juiceitupp.com/the-411-on-juicing/ http://www.juiceitupp.com/the-411-on-juicing/#comments Mon, 07 Mar 2016 07:33:41 +0000 http://www.juiceitupp.com/?p=828 green-juice-with-pineapple

Have you heard about juicing for quite a while and don’t understand what the fuss is all about? I agree. It does seem like the latest fad that more people get into. Why is this juicing trend so popular? Nobody likes crazy diets. Honestly, nobody has the time, the discipline or the money for them. And let’s not forget that drastic diets are not even healthy. Here’s where juicing is so different. It doesn’t restrict your mind or diet, but expands them. Juicing never gets boring because of all the new recipes to try. Everybody new to juicing loves it because what people say is true. It’s fun and easy!

Ok, what is juicing? First of all anyone can try it because it’s nothing extravagant. It simply extracts the pure essence of vegetables and fruits, which are nutrients and vitamins, with the catch that it’s extracted without the fiber of the pulp. Yeah that’s the scary “catch” you will get. Being left with pure organic vitamins. Come on, there is no way to lose by juicing. Nowadays we understand the importance of enough vitamins and we are sold supplements of all types to put in our system. But what better way to get vitamins than by getting them straight from nature? Pharmacy pills are artificial and are not as effective as pure natural juice. Juice is straight from nature!! You don’t have to look anywhere else for nutrients than in actual food. Juicing is like eating piles of fruits and vegetables.

Now here comes the fun part, it’s healthy AND delicious. There are infinite recipes to experiment with. If you don’t like one, that is not a problem. You can just try more and more until you find some you like. (Here’s a great beginner recipe) Trust me, you will not get bored because there is always something new to learn. You can either buy books filled with new recipes or just find them online. These recipes are very accessible and with time you’ll even end up creating your own special ones. It’s a yummy and great way to keep you and your family (including your kids) motivated to be healthy.

Now there are not just different recipes to try but also different juicing machines that fit to your needs. The most expensive ones are not necessarily the best. With time and practice you’ll find one or several that are just right for you. You may need a juicer for vegetables or maybe just a lemon squeezer. There is so much to Juicing, But you don’t need a PhD because at Juice It Upp you can get the right information you need. Insights on all the benefits of juice and on all the types of juicing machines that can help you get into this fun craze. So, get started right away or start with a friend or a family member. Hold on tight because once you start you won’t ever want to stop.

Maybe it is a fad, we’ll let you decide. Either way it’s fun and healthy thing to do!

3 Reasons Why You Shouldn’t Drink Soda http://www.juiceitupp.com/3-reasons-why-you-shouldnt-drink-soda/ http://www.juiceitupp.com/3-reasons-why-you-shouldnt-drink-soda/#comments Mon, 10 Aug 2015 03:54:31 +0000 http://www.juiceitupp.com/?p=808 empty-coca-cola-bottle Good ol’ Coca Cola…it’s been a US staple since the 1900’s- a sponsor of the World Cup, owning a patent store on the Vegas Strip itself– it’s been an important part of the American lifestyle and now we shall see why some cultural norms just do a society no good.

To start off this article, did you know that Coca Cola is named after its two primary ingredients from back in the 1880’s? These are coca leaves (yes, the ones that produce cocaine) and kola nuts from which caffeine is derived.

The use of coca leaves in this world-renowned soft-drink has since ceased, but the negative effects of consuming soda are extant. Below you will find 3 reasons why you shouldn’t drink soda.

Sugar is a Drug

And here we stand in 2015 with cocaine, heroin and methamphetamines as illegal yet we turn our view from long lines at Krispy Kreme and the exhausted American at the Safeway check-out with 5 Snickers Bars in his cart. All are going through the same– sugar withdrawals.

Soft-drinks are notorious for their high-sugar content. For example, in 12 fl oz of Mountain Dew, you’ll find 46 grams of pure, synthetic, type-2 diabetes inducing sugar. That’s 3.83 grams of sugar per oz of soda. As a comparison, a cup of blueberries has 15 grams of sugar- not to mention a load of antioxidants.

With so much sugar, it’s easy to understand why soda is so addictive. It has nothing to do with any nutritional benefit of the drink itself. Your body is responding to a need for energy and quite possibly reacting the way a crack-addict reacts from coming off of drugs.

Put the soda down and go for a walk. Your body will thank you.

Pretty Teeth are White Teeth

When we look at the hottest celebs shining their million-dollar smiles at the camera, the one thing we don’t see are icky, brown, stained chompers.

A great smile spreads joy to others. It lets the world know you’re happy and if you have nice unstained teeth, you’re more likely to show your grin to those around you thus exuding confidence and self-esteem.

So where does soda come in in all of this?

Soda stains your teeth- particularly dark colored soda. Over time, your enamel absorbs that lovely brown caramel coloring and you get some not so lovely dark caramel teeth.

But staining aside, soda is a highly acidic compound which leads to tooth erosion. This occurs with clear and diet sodas as well.

The double whammy here is that as your teeth erode, they become more susceptible to staining. Yuck!

Calories Galore

Weight loss and maintenance is fairly simple. If you burn more calories than you take in, you’re gonna lose weight. If you take in more calories than you burn, you’re gonna gain weight.

Soda is the dark villain when it comes to weight loss. You might as well call it Sauron or Walder Frey. For one thing (and I speak from personal experience), while you’re drinking soda, you’re not paying attention to the volume which you’re ingesting.

Case in point, it’s 7PM and you’re just leaving work. You’re starving because the last meal you ate was at noon. You roll into the Burger King drive-through and ask for a Whopper. They ask you if you want to be super-sized and you say yes because you’re so tired, you’ve lost control of your mental faculties. They hand you that Whopper and a 64 oz Coke. Now– you’d think the Whopper is bad enough. This king of the coronary bypass has 660 calories BUT the 64 oz Coke actually trumps it at 776 calories. That means that in ONE meal, you are consuming over 1,400 calories– and I haven’t even mentioned the fries. That’s close to the average DAILY calorie intake for a 130 lb 26 year old- and most of that came from your soda. Think about it.

NOTE: A Big Mac has 549 calories. Just thought some of you might like to know.

In conclusion, there are so many better ways to “spend” your calories and foods that are known to increase energy and vitality– even brighten up your smile!

If you need to get off of soda, I recommend you begin juicing with higher sugar content fruits and lessen the amount of sugar on a gradient so that your body is not going into a huge plunge from what it’s used to. Adding spirulina and chlorella to your juice or shake is also quite helpful to maintaining energy levels.

Blood Kale Juice Recipe – A Killer Juice http://www.juiceitupp.com/blood-kale-juice-recipe/ http://www.juiceitupp.com/blood-kale-juice-recipe/#comments Sun, 01 Feb 2015 04:44:58 +0000 http://www.juiceitupp.com/?p=768 I’ve recently fallen in love with blood oranges. My favorite vendor at the local farmers’ market (Rojas Family Farms) has amazing blood oranges that I cannot resist, I buy there week after week. I decided to include them in my next juice. I did, and I made a great recipe that I’d like to share with you.

Ingredients for Blood Kale Juice (1 serving):

  • 2 blood oranges
  • 2 carrots
  • 1 bunch of kale (I use curly kale)
  • 1 apple
  • 1 lemon

Blood-Kale-Juice-Ingredients-1

All you do is put these bad boys into the juicer of your choice. It comes out really delicious. I made it using the Omega NC800 HDS which does a great job at keeping all the nutrients in the juice. Here is the beut next to all the ingredients peeled and chopped:
Blood-Kale-Juice-Prepared-Omega-NC800-HDS-silverThe idea to use the blood oranges in a juice came quickly and the recipe will last with it’s amazing taste. Wow is it is amazing. If you don’t have access to blood oranges, they can be replaced with regular navel oranges or whatever type you’d like, you’d be missing out but it’s better than nothing!

When my mom came over from Miami, she took a blood orange out of my store of fruits and when she opened it she said “Papi! Esta naranja esta roja!” (Sweetie! This orange is red!) she had never seen such a fruit in her life. Where she grew up in Venezuela she never came across or in Miami where she lives now she hasn’t either. Her initial reaction was pretty hilarious but afterward she told me how much she loved them. This made me realize that many people have never tried the fabulous fruit.

Make the juice and let me know what you think. It’s really worth it. I also advise that you make at least 2 servings and share with a loved one. My wife was rave about the juice. The other alternative is to get a citrus juicer and make blood orange juice with no veggies; it’s not as healthy but has an even better taste.

10 Tips To Get The Most Out of Juicing http://www.juiceitupp.com/10-tips-to-get-the-most-out-of-juicing/ http://www.juiceitupp.com/10-tips-to-get-the-most-out-of-juicing/#respond Mon, 17 Nov 2014 04:55:28 +0000 http://www.juiceitupp.com/?p=740 fruit_stand_tips_for_juicing

1) Drink the juice right away. The sooner you drink your juice after making it, the better. The longer you wait the less nutrients it contains because as soon as the enzymes from the juice hit the air they begin to oxidize. You can somewhat maintain your juice fresh for up to 24-36 hours if you store it in the fridge in an air-tight container, but you only retain some of the nutrients even with the best storage. You’re better off drinking it right away.

2) Add some ginger root to your juice. Your juice will get a little bit of a zing, at least try it! Juice ½ of a ginger root to while you are making your juice, or a bit less if you’re only making one cup of juice. Not only will this give it a unique taste, but ginger has the additional benefit of having anti-inflammatory agents in it.

3) Taste as you go. It’s always a good idea to taste the drink before putting everything away to make sure it’s palatable; especially when trying new ingredients. You can always add a bit of lemon or an apple if the taste is not quite right, this will almost always do the trick.

4) Know what you’re going to juice before you get started. List out what fruits and veggies you need from the store or farmers market before you start preparing your juice (get a recipe). This makes it much faster for you and helps make sure you don’t forget anything so you don’t have to go back out to the store to get that one ingredient you forgot.

5) Drink your fresh juice on an empty stomach. It is a common mistake to drink your juice with a meal. I don’t know if you’ve ever experienced this, but sometimes you can get heart burn or acid reflux if you drink juice right after eating. The whole point of juicing is to get those vitamins, minerals and antioxidants straight into your system. If you drink after you have eaten then your body has to work much harder to get to those nutrients. Even worse, if you ate a heavy lunch or dinner, the fruits can rot in your stomach before being digested! After your juice is second in line! Therefore I’d suggest waiting 2 hours after eating a meal to drink juice and waiting 20 min after juicing to eat a meal. This way your body has enough time to assimilate everything into your system.

6) Set aside time. We all know juicing takes a bit of time, 10-30 mins to juice and clean up, depending on the juicer you have and your overall speed. I’ve found that getting the juicer assembled, separating out all the ingredients and washing them the night before can help to save time in the morning if you plan on juicing before work. Then after you’re done juicing, clean your juicier quickly or minimally leave it in water so the small bits of fruits and veggies don’t get stuck inside and become hard to get out. Time yourself and set aside at least that much time to juice, also practice to increase your speed so you can do it faster the next time around.

7) Focus on juicing mostly veggies, but add fruits as necessary. Juicing allows you to get much more produce into your system than eating fruits or veggies alone. This can be harmful if you juice too many fruits because of the over-consumption of sugar. So it’s important to be mindful of how much fruit you add into your juice. Granted, juices have raw sugars which are much better for you than refined sugar, but it’s still a good idea to keep the fruits to a minimum. I’d suggest using 1-2 apples per juice as I’ve experienced them to be the most effective way to make all the juice more palatable and easy to drink.

8) Feed the pulp through the juicer again. Check the pulp to see if it’s moist, if so, run it through again and you will find that you can get even more juice out of your produce. This works especially well if you do not have a juicer with a high extraction rate.

9) How to preserve your juice longer. If you don’t want to drink the juice right away I’d suggest adding a bit of ice to it to help keep the enzyme activity alive longer. Another trick to help preserve juice is adding some lemon or lime to the juice. But above all, keep the juice in an air-tight container, and do not store it for more than 2 days.

10) Add back in some fiber. If you’re looking at using the juice as a meal replacement I’d suggest adding back in a few scoops of the pulp so the juice is more filling. This will not affect your body’s assimilation of the good nutrients found in the juice.

BONUS: 11) Get started! If you never get started juicing, you’ll never get any benefits! Start juicing today.

Drink the Juice that King Tut Drank http://www.juiceitupp.com/drink-the-juice-that-king-tut-drank/ http://www.juiceitupp.com/drink-the-juice-that-king-tut-drank/#respond Sun, 09 Nov 2014 19:35:28 +0000 http://www.juiceitupp.com/?p=722 Pomegranates are one of the world’s most ancient foods. People have been eating them even as early as 3000 BC. Pomegranates were found in King Tut’s tomb. Archaeologists have also found them (carbonized) in places such as Jericho and Cyprus and in Egyptian tombs. Pomegranates were also used in their entirety: the peel was used to dye leather while the flower was crushed to make red dye and the juice was used as tonic to kill parasites. Whew, that’s intense. Now we just eat the seeds and throw everything else away.
pomegrantes-from-india
Pomegranates have grown to fame in the last 10 years. Many pomegranate juice brands have emerged in the wake of public knowledge of the fruit’s health benefits. Consumption has skyrocketed delivering many antioxidant compounds to the public at large. The fruit offer protection against heart disease and cancer due to the high content levels of flavonoids and polyphenols and potent antioxidants. Just 1 glass of pomegranate juice has more antioxidants than blueberries, cranberries and green tea.

Slowly but surely, the juices have lessened in quality. It has been found that pomegranate juice now gets combined with grape and apple juice to make it less expensive and to make it taste sweeter. Products labelled “100% pomegranate juice” may also be filled with other juices, high fructose corn syrup or sugar water. (FDA where are you?!) If you are already an avid juicer you most likely already know about the ridiculous labeling that gets put onto juices just to make the consumer think “they are good for you”. It’s their marketing technique they use to get you to buy their juice. It’ll always be harder to use a masticating juicer, but the benefits will be infinitely greater.

As you may know sometimes manufacturers even sneak in clouding additives to make the juice look “fresh-squeezed”. The one most often used is a chemical known as “phthalates” which has been found to make people sick. Around 4,000 people in Taiwan have become sick from ingesting products that included this substance. This is the same chemical you can also find in plastic.

Now, if you really want to get the benefits of the pomegranate juice 100% I’d suggest juicing it yourself. It’s not that hard at all, you just need to use the proper juicer. In fact you can go to your local Farmers Market as they are in season right now (November) and buy 4 of them and juice your very own glass of pomegranate juice. You can also buy them in bulk and put them in a plastic bag in the refrigerator and they will last for at least 2 months. It costs much less than buying 100% pure pomegranate juice and there are way more health benefits when you juice yourself. When you juice fresh and then drink it right away you get close to 100% of the nutritional value of the juice as opposed to purchasing it even if it’s been freshly made that morning you get about 65% of the nutritional value of the juice.

As an aside note you may want to get a pomegranate deseeder that helps you get all the seeds out of the pomegranate much faster without having to get all messy. You can order it on amazon here: The Pomegranate Tool

San Francisco Bans Sale of Water Bottles Within City Limits http://www.juiceitupp.com/san-francisco-bans-sale-of-water-bottles-within-city-limits/ http://www.juiceitupp.com/san-francisco-bans-sale-of-water-bottles-within-city-limits/#comments Wed, 19 Mar 2014 22:08:24 +0000 http://www.juiceitupp.com/?p=602 San Francisco is taking drastic action against water bottle pollution. They are completely prohibiting water bottle sales on the city’s properties. Why? “Given that San Franciscans can access clean and inexpensive water out of our taps, we need to wean ourselves out of our addiction to plastic water bottles,” said David Chiu, the author of the ordinance.

On Tuesday, March 4th 2014, the Board of Supervisors voted unanimously to pass the ordinance that bans sale of plastic water bottles smaller than 21 ounces on city property. This will be effective on October 1st 2014.

San Francisco is leading the way again by reducing plastic waste. In 2007, the city was the first to ban plastic bag use in large grocery stores. In 2012 it further banned non-compostable plastic bags from being used in restaurants and retail stores. Today, stores are required to charge a minimum of 10-cents on allowed plastic bags with some exceptions.

Chiu is very passionate about making San Francisco the most green city. Other arguments he uses to support this new ban is that water bottles consume a lot of oil in production and transportation. Also, that the “fad” of water bottles started in the 1990s and before then “everybody managed to stay hydrated” —Chiu [Source]

The Plastic Water Bottle Fight Rages On

Even though this ordinance may seem completely innovative, it is only the next stage in the longer fight against environmental pollution by water bottles and water bottle companies.

  • in 2008 the Toronto City Council approved a water bottle ban to begin in 2012. The ban prohibits distribution of water bottles in all city facilities and parks. (Canada beat us to it)
  • Dozens of US universities have water-bottle-free policies with various levels of strictness.
  • There are 14 water-bottle-free national parks, including the Grand Canyon National Park.
  • The City of Concord was the first US city to pass a water-bottle ban. The law prohibits the sale of non-sparking, unflavored drinking water in plastic bottles of 1-liter or less.
  • Supervisor Chiu of the city of San Francisco previously sponsored legislation that would require water fountains with water bottle filling capabilities in all new construction in the city.

Twitter Reactions to the San Francisco Water Bottle Ordinance

Positive Reactions

And even all the way from Indonesia, from the World Wildlife Fund:

Negative Reactions

And, of course, the GOP response:

Follow the law, or else

Regardless of the mixed responses to the new ordinance, it includes a penalty for those who don’t comply: a hefty $1,000 fine each time they are caught selling individual water bottles in a way conflicting with the ordinance.

So, yes this will go into effect in October and it may start catching on in other cities. Will we see sales of other bottled products such as juices go up? It is very likely, however we hope that the majority of current water bottle drinkers do not merely switch to different plastic bottles, but instead switch to refillable bottles.
